The  following is a study guide given to students after reading the first three chapters of Freak the Mighty.

Chapter 1

Directions:  Answer the following questions in full sentences.

1.     Who is narrating the story? In what point of view is the story told?

2. List FIVE points about how the author describes himself.

3. Who does the narrator live with? Explain how they feel about him.

4. What is Grim’s opinion of the narrator’s father? Give PROOF—quote from the story.

5. When did Kevin and Max first meet?

6. Describe little Freak.

7. How old is Max at the end of Chapter 1? Explain what is happening to him.

Chapter 2

1.     Describe the “down under.” Does Max like the “down under”?

2.     When does the story take place? (setting)

3.     Who are the new neighbors? Describe them. (Make FIVE points).

4.     Describe the meeting between Max and Kevin.

Chapter 3

1.      Max says Kevin “scared” him.  Explain what he meant.

2.     Why is Max waving his crutch at the tree?

3.     At the end of the chapter, where is Max pulling Kevin?

4.     Compare and contrast Kevin and Max.
